Doris M Kiacz Memorial Fund
Doris Kiacz was employed by Durand Area Schools for 38 years. She was an elementary teacher, a reading specialist and also served as an elementary principal. In addition to working with children at school, Doris was a 4-H leader and became a mentor to many new teachers and to countless local children. Doris passed away in January 2015 and her family established the Doris M. Kiacz Fund to perpetuate her love of early childhood education.
This fund is endowed with the Shiawassee Community Foundation and provides money for Durand Area School students in grades pre K through 8th grade for field trips and experiences outside the classroom that supplement the science curriculum. The amount of funds available will depend on the amount of interest accrued, typically about $400 annually. Applicants should use the Mini grant Application with the notation that the application is for the Doris Kiacz Fund. A Doris Kiacz Fund grant can be supplemented with requests from the Foundation Mini grant fund. Applications are accepted throughout the year.
Marjorie Smith Fund for Girls Athletics*
Marjorie Smith graduated from DHS in 1941. Although she loved sports, there were no school team sports for high girls at that time. After graduation, Marjorie received a Bachelor’s Degree from Michigan State University and a Master’s Degree at Los Angeles University. She taught physical education and coached women’s collegiate sports at Citrus College in California. Marjorie Smith passed away in 2014, leaving a legacy gift so girls attending Durand Area Schools would have access to high quality organized team sports.
The Smith Fund provides money for skill building for teams of girls participating in athletic and fitness programs at Durand Area Schools. There is no suggested maximum for the amount that may be requested. Applicants should use the Mini grant Application with the notation that the application is for the Marjorie Smith Fund. Applications are accepted throughout the year. The Smith Fund is a Preferred Use fund that will be used until funds are exhausted.
Jim Fuller Fund*
Jim Fuller taught and coached at Durand High School from 1976-1990. His career included successful coaching at K-12 districts and at the collegiate level, Fuller had several outstanding years in Durand where he coached numerous baseball and football teams into post season and play-off games. He continues to be a presence with DHS athletics, providing guidance and support for the DHS Athletic Hall of Fame program.
The Jim Fuller Fund is a donor Preferred Use fund established in to provide financial support for boy’s athletic programs at Durand Area High School. Funds may be added to the account at anytime by anyone wishing to do so. The fund is not endowed, thus monies will be used until exhausted where upon the fund will be closed. Monies can be used for coaches, trainers, equipment and other items that support the boys’ athletic program. There is no suggested maximum for the amount that may be requested. Applicants should use the Mini grant Application with the notation that the request is for the Jim Fuller Fund. Applications are accepted throughout the year.
